Title
Kevin-01: Kevin's Big IdeaReading Text
Episode 1: Kevinās Big Idea Kevin is a gray koala with big ears and a very black nose. He lives in a tall eucalyptus tree in the Blue Mountains. Every day, Kevin eats leaves. Every day, Kevin sleeps for 20 hours. "I am bored," Kevin says to his friend, Dottie the Platypus. "I want to see Australia. I want to see the big ocean and the red sand." Dottie looks surprised. "But Kevin, you are a koala! You are slow. Australia is very, very big." Kevin climbs down from his branch. This is special because koalas don't like walking on the ground. "I have a map," Kevin says. He shows Dottie an old, dusty map. "The Great Australian Party is in Perth. I am going to go there." "It is a long way, mate," Dottie says. "I know," Kevin answers. "But I can do it! Today, I am packing my bag. I have my sunnies, my water bottle, and a jar of Vegemite." Kevin is ready. He is not a sleepy koala today. He is an explorer! šØ Aussie Talk In this story, Dottie calls Kevin "mate." In Australia, we use "mate" for everyoneāfriends, family, or even people we don't know! It is a very friendly word. Kevin also packs his "sunnies." Australians love to shorten words; "sunnies" is just a short, fun way to say sunglasses. Finally, he packs Vegemite. This is a famous Australian food spread made from yeast extract. It is salty, dark brown, and most Aussies eat it on toast for breakfast! š Grammar Spotlight Look at the sentence: "Every day, Kevin eats leaves." This is an example of the Present Simple. We use this tense to talk about habits or routinesāthings that happen regularly. Later, Kevin says, "I am going to go there." We use the structure "be + going to + verb" when we talk about future plans or intentions. Kevin hasn't left yet, but he has a clear plan to travel to Perth!
