The First Thanksgiving Day
Title
The First Thanksgiving DayReading Text
The story of Thanksgiving dates back to 1620, when a group of English settlers known as Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on a ship called the Mayflower. They landed at Plymouth Rock in what is now Massachusetts, seeking religious freedom. However, their first winter was incredibly harsh. They lacked sufficient food and many fell ill, resulting in the death of nearly half the group. In the spring, they were helped by the Wampanoag Native Americans. A man named Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, and catch fish in the local rivers. This assistance was vital for their survival. By the autumn of 1621, the Pilgrims had a successful harvest. To celebrate their bounty and express gratitude, they organized a three-day feast. They invited the Wampanoag leader, Massasoit, and his people to join them. This event is often remembered as the 'First Thanksgiving.' While the modern holiday involves turkey and parades, the original feast focused on survival and the cooperation between two very different cultures. It wasn't until 1863, during the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, intended to heal the wounds of a divided nation.
