Title
Kevin-04: The Train to SydneyReading Text
Episode 4: The Train to Sydney Kevin walks to the train station. He wants to go to Sydney. He looks at a big ticket machine, but he doesn't have a ticket. A large white bird is sitting on the machine. It is a cockatoo. "Hello, mate," the cockatoo says. "Do you need an Opal card?" "What is an Opal card?" Kevin asks. "It is a smart card for the train, the bus, and the ferry," the bird explains. "You tap it here." "Ta!" Kevin says. He buys an Opal card. He looks at the big clock on the wall. "When does the train leave?" "It leaves at ten o'clock," the bird says. "Hurry up! It is five to ten now!" Kevin runs to the platform. The train doors open, and he finds a seat. He looks out the window. He is ready for the city! šØ Aussie Talk The cockatoo mentions an "Opal card." This is the smart card used to pay for public transport in Sydney and the surrounding areas. Kevin says "Ta!" when he gets his card. "Ta" is a very common, short way to say "Thank you" in Australia and the UK. š Grammar Spotlight Look at this sentence: "It leaves at ten o'clock." This is an example of Telling Time and using the Present Simple for schedules. Even if the train leaves in the future, we use the Present Simple tense to talk about official timetables (trains, buses, movies, or flights).
