Reading Text
In the late 1960s, a strange series of events occurred in a small, quiet town called Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It all began on a dark night in November 1966, when two young couples reported seeing a terrifying creature near an abandoned TNT factory from World War II. They described a figure that was part man and part bird, standing over two meters tall. Most notably, it had massive wings and glowing, hypnotic red eyes that seemed to pierce through the darkness. The local newspapers quickly gave this mysterious visitor a name: "The Mothman." Following the initial report, dozens of other residents claimed to have seen the creature. Witnesses stated the Mothman could fly faster than a car, keeping pace with vehicles traveling at high speeds. Despite its frightening appearance, the creature never physically attacked anyone. However, its presence created a heavy atmosphere of dread throughout the community. People felt that something terrible was about to happen, and many were afraid to leave their homes after sunset. The most famous and tragic part of the story is the connection to a local disaster. Throughout 1967, sightings continued until a cold December evening. On December 15, the Silver Bridge, which connected Point Pleasant to Ohio, suddenly collapsed into the icy Ohio River. This tragedy resulted in the deaths of 46 people. Afterward, rumors spread that the Mothman had been seen standing on the bridge’s steel beams just days or even hours before it fell. Many locals began to believe the creature was a "harbinger"—a supernatural sign of bad luck or an omen sent to warn the town about the impending disaster. While some skeptics believe the sightings were actually a large bird, like a sandhill crane, or even a prank, the legend remains a significant part of American folklore. Today, Point Pleasant celebrates its history with a shiny metallic Mothman statue in the center of town and an annual festival that attracts thousands of fans. Even though there have been no recent sightings, the mystery of the Mothman continues to scare and fascinate people from all over the world.
