Reading Text
The Blackchin tilapia is a type of fish originally from West Africa. Around 2010, it was introduced to Thailand. Today, it has become a very dangerous invasive species—a plant or animal that spreads to a new area and harms the local environment. Why is the Blackchin tilapia such a big problem? First, it can live in many different types of water, including rivers, canals, and salty coastal areas. Second, it reproduces very quickly. A single female can produce hundreds of young fish at once! Third, these fish have a large appetite. They eat the eggs and babies of native fish, shrimp, and snails. This destroys the local ecosystem and hurts the businesses of Thai fish farmers. To stop this alien fish, the Thai government and local people are working together. The government is paying fishermen to catch as many Blackchin tilapia as possible. They are also putting predator fish, like seabass, into the water to eat the tilapia. Finally, people are finding creative ways to cook them. Many restaurants now use Blackchin tilapia to make delicious fish balls, sausages, and fish sauce. By eating them, people can help save Thailand's native wildlife.
