Reading Text
If you visit the cold, rocky coasts of Scotland or Ireland, you might see seals swimming in the ocean. According to local legends, these might not be normal animals. They could be Selkies—magical beings that can change their shape. These mythical creatures are central to Celtic and Norse folklore, representing the deep connection between humans and the mysterious sea. The stories say that Selkies are seals while they are in the water. However, they can come onto the land, shed their seal skins, and become beautiful humans. The transformation is triggered when they step onto the shore, usually during a full moon or a special festival. Once their heavy, grey skin is removed, they appear as men or women of incredible beauty. However, they must guard their skins carefully. If a Selkie loses its skin, it is trapped in human form and cannot return to its underwater home. These stories are often quite melancholy. In many legends, a human man steals a female Selkie’s skin while she is dancing on the beach. Without her skin, she is forced to live as a human wife. She might be a kind and loving mother, but she always stares longingly at the horizon. She feels a profound sense of homesickness for the cold waves. Selkies are known for being gentle and kind, but they are never truly happy on land. Usually, the story reaches a climax when the Selkie, or perhaps one of her children, finds the hidden skin many years later. The Selkie immediately puts it on and returns to the waves, leaving her human family behind without a second thought. While this seems tragic, it represents the Selkie returning to her true nature. These myths help explain the mystery of the ocean and the powerful, inexplicable attraction that many people feel toward the sea. They remind us that some things belong to the wild and can never truly be tamed.
