Episode 8: Life at the Beach The ferry stops at Manly. Kevin walks down the street and sees the ocean. The sand is yellow, and the water is clear and blue. There are hundreds of people! Kevin wants to swim. He sees a man wearing a red and yellow hat. The man is a Surf Life Saver. "Excuse me," Kevin says. "Can I swim here?" "Yes, you can," the life saver says. "But you must stay between the red and yellow flags. It is safe there." Kevin watches the tall waves. He sees people standing on surfboards. "I can swim," Kevin thinks, "but I can't surf." He puts on his hat and his sunscreen. He walks into the cool water. The beach is the best place in the world! šØ Aussie Talk Kevin meets a Surf Life Saver. These are specially trained volunteers who watch the beaches and keep swimmers safe. They always wear red and yellow uniforms. When you go to a beach in Australia, you must always swim between the red and yellow flags! š Grammar Spotlight Look at the sentences: "Can I swim here?", "Yes, you can", and "I can't surf." Kevin decides not to try surfing because he can't do it. Is it a good idea to try new, difficult things on holiday, or is it better to stick to what you know?
