The Life of a Butterfly

A butterfly is beautiful. But it does not start as a butterfly. It changes shape completely. This big change is called metamorphosis. Stage 1: The Egg. A mother butterfly lays a tiny egg on a leaf. Stage 2: The Larva. A baby comes out of the egg. We call this a caterpillar, or a larva. It is very hungry. It eats leaves to grow big. Stage 3: The Pupa. The caterpillar builds a hard shell. This house is called a chrysalis. Inside, the caterpillar’s body changes. Stage 4: The Adult. The shell opens. A butterfly comes out! It is now an adult insect. It has wings and six legs.
